In the first month of 1368, Zhu Yuanzhang became emperor, established the Ming Dynasty and changed the Yuan Dynasty to Hongwu. In March of the same year, Zhu Yuanzhang, the emperor Taizu of the Ming Dynasty, ordered Baoyuan Bureau of the Ministry of industry in Beijing and Baoquan bureaus of all provinces to cast “Hongwu Tongbao”. The Ministry of industry was in charge of casting money and set up Baoyuan Bureau under it. In order to avoid the yuan characters of the Yuan Dynasty, Zhu Yuanzhang called all the money and articles cast Tongbao instead of Yuanbao, not just to avoid his own name. There was no Yuanbao money and articles cast in the future. Hongwu Tongbao coin system followed the shape of “large and medium-sized Tongbao” cast by Zhu Yuanzhang at the end of the Yuan Dynasty. Hongwu Tongbao came into being. It is the product of coin reform in this historical period and has a strong historical edification.
